1063 Mount Rogers Hike 5/10/2008 5/10/2008 This moderate-difficult 4 mile (one way) hike on the Appalachian Trail meanders through open fields, over rock outcroppings, and finally through a boreal forest to the summit of Mt. Rogers. While hiking over the massive rock outcroppings on Wilburn Ridge we will discover the common types of plant and animal life that inhabit the ridge as well as the geologic history. Upon reaching the summit of Mt. Rogers we will be in one of the last boreal forests this far south in the Appalachian Mountains made up of Red Spruce, Frasier Fir, mosses, and the rare Weller’s Salamander. Please bring a pack lunch, plenty of water, appropriate footwear, and dress appropriately for the weather. $3.00 adults and children under 12 free. 1113 Grayson Highlands Photography Workshop 5/17/2008 5/17/2008 This workshop is designed for hobbyist interested in improving their skills of photography. Learn various techniques to succeed in producing a good image. Emphasis will be on composition, features of an SLR, and digital printing and sharing by mini lectures and evaluations of photos. Participants will spend time photographing at the park so bring your camera and a bag lunch for Saturday. Registration is required. Please call the park at (276) 579-7092. 869 Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition 6/21/2008 6/21/2008 The Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival features local and regional bluegrass and old-time bands as well as Wayne Henderson and Friends. The festival features a different nationally recognized performer every year. $10 admission fee; children 12 and under are free. 1064 Junior Rangers 2008 7/7/2008 7/7/2008 Hey kids, it's almost time for Junior Rangers 2008. This year activities include hiking, wild ponies, crafts, games, geology, and building forts. $5.00 per day and $15.00 for all three days. Bring your lunch and snacks each day. 1065 Grayson Highlands Dog Show 8/9/2008 8/9/2008 Bring out your pooch and enter in a fun oriented program that includes dress-up, tricks, fetch, and ends with a parade through the campground. Dogs must be registered by August 5th. Dogs need to be friendly and get along with other dogs and people as well. The program is limited to 15 dogs. $5.00 entry fee, and every dog wins and prize. 870 Annual Fall Harvest Festival 9/27/2008 9/28/2008 Virginia's unique traditional mountain culture comes alive during the two-day festival as the air is filled with sounds of music and the sweet smell of apple butter, hobo pies, cider and sorghum molasses. There will also be a pony sale, blacksmithing demonstrations, kids' games, more than 100 arts-and-crafts. It's $6.00 per car per day.
