| 1063 | Mount Rogers Hike | 5/10/2008 | 5/10/2008 | This moderate-difficult 4 mile (one way) hike on the Appalachian Trail meanders through open fields, over rock outcroppings, and finally through a boreal forest to the summit of Mt. Rogers. While hiking over the massive rock outcroppings on Wilburn Ridge we will discover the common types of plant and animal life that inhabit the ridge as well as the geologic history. Upon reaching the summit of Mt. Rogers we will be in one of the last boreal forests this far south in the Appalachian Mountains made up of Red Spruce, Frasier Fir, mosses, and the rare Weller’s Salamander.
